Send large files.Confidential, no third-party cloud.
Your people work as they always have — except the file is encrypted on their own machine and lands on your server instead of someone else’s cloud. The recipient gets an email from your address with a link in it. No account, no app, no instructions needed.
Works with Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and any other mail client.
For confidential and specially protected data.
LightSend is built for companies working with sensitive and specially protected data — companies that would rather not rely on a third party being careful enough. Size and industry do not matter; the standard does.
Professional secrecy
Accounting, law, medicine, human resources: anyone bound to confidentiality cannot place documents on a server they know nothing about.
Specially protected personal data
Health, religion, biometrics, social benefits, criminal proceedings. Where the law demands particular care, a download link from somewhere is not enough.
Your own trade secrets
Design data, formulas, contracts, figures before publication. Even without a legal obligation, that does not belong in someone else’s storage.
In detail for individual professions: Accounting and bookkeeping · Law firms · Medical practices · Architecture and planning
Send large files without giving them away.
When the attachment is too large, the file ends up with a service nobody in the company chose — on servers whose location nobody knows. Fine for a price list. Not for a patient record.
Mailboxes are too small
Most mail servers accept 10 to 25 MB. One folder of drawings, one video, one annual report with appendices — and the message bounces.
Third-party services are delicate
Anyone who uploads a file in plaintext gives it away. And anyone who stores it abroad must be able to explain why.
The recipient hesitates
A link from a sender nobody recognises does not get clicked. With LightSend the email comes from your address.
Three steps, and none of them leaves your house.
Pick the file
In the Outlook add-in, in the companion app, or straight in the browser. Right click, Send to, done — or drag and drop.
Encrypt and store
Encryption happens on the sender’s machine, before anything leaves the device. All that reaches your server is the unreadable block.
Send the link
A link appears in the mail draft. The message goes through your mail server and your address. The recipient installs nothing.
Documents come back as well.
For accountants and medical practices the return trip matters more: receipts, reports and forms arrive more often than they leave. And today they arrive as an unencrypted attachment, on a USB stick, or not at all.
You invite, they send
One invitation to the client is enough. She opens the link, picks her files and sends them encrypted to your server — without creating an account and without installing anything.
Encryption happens at her end
The return trip works exactly like the outbound one: the file leaves her machine already unreadable. The server sees nothing of what comes in either.
The invitation expires
After seven days it is void, and you can withdraw it at any time before that. An access nobody remembers is therefore not one that stays open.
One server at your place — and two ways to use it day to day.
The server receives the encrypted files — that is the actual product. So that nobody has to open a website for it, two small programs bring the sending to where the work already happens: into the mail client. Which of the two fits depends on the kind of mailbox you have — the table below tells you in ten seconds.
The server — installed at your place
Runs on the web hosting you already have. It receives the encrypted files, hands them back to the recipient, and deletes them when the deadline passes. Your staff can also work with it straight in the browser, with no extra program at all.
Included: user administration, a history of every transfer, and an audit log showing who collected what and when.
The add-in for Outlook
A narrow panel right beside the message you are writing. Drag the file in — the link is in the draft before you have finished typing the recipient. Works in classic Outlook, new Outlook and Outlook on the web.
For: Microsoft 365 and Exchange. Rolled out once by IT, after that it is simply there.
The companion app for Windows and Mac
A small program you install once — after that a right click on a file in Explorer or Finder is enough: Send to → LightSend. It encrypts, uploads, and opens the finished draft in whatever mail client you already use.
For: everything outside Microsoft — Apple Mail, Thunderbird, IMAP mailboxes. The recipient notices no difference.
Which program for which mailbox
You need: {{ empfehlung }}
| Your mailbox and mail client | Add-in | Companion app |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 / Exchange | Yes | Yes |
| IMAP / POP | Never loads | Yes |
| Outlook on the web | Yes | — |
| Apple Mail | No plugin allowed | Yes |
| Thunderbird | — | Yes |
Outlook add-ins never load for IMAP or POP mailboxes, in any version of Outlook, and Apple Mail allows no plugin that alters the message body. That is exactly why the companion app exists.
End-to-end encrypted: the server cannot read what it stores.
That is not a promise, it is a construction. The key is created on the sender’s device and lives in the link — it never reaches the server.
The file leaves the machine unreadable
Steal the server’s disk and you have nothing — and we could not hand anything over either, however politely asked.
AES-256-GCM in the browser, key derived with PBKDF2-SHA256 over 310'000 rounds, split with HKDF.
Someone leaves the company? One click.
Every device signs in with its own credential that you can revoke on its own — at once, without everybody else needing a new password.
A credential may only send: nothing to fetch, nothing to administer. Valid for at most a year.
The link alone is not enough
If it reaches the wrong person by accident, they still cannot open it: doing so needs a code as well — or a password you agree by telephone.
After 10 failed attempts, an hour of lockout.
Nothing lingers, everything is provable
Transfers delete themselves, and you can show at any time who collected what and when — useful when someone claims nothing ever arrived.
Deadline 3–30 days, audit log on your server.
What LightSend deliberately does not do.
-
×
It sends nothing itself. No mail relay, no delivery provider, no third server. Every email goes through your mail server and your address.
-
×
It reports nothing home.No telemetry, no counters, no analysis of your transfers. This site, too, loads nothing from third-party servers.
-
×
It keeps no spare keys. There is no master key and no recovery by us. If there were one, the promise would be worthless.
-
×
It forces nothing on the recipient. No account, no installation, no app. A browser is enough.
Two ways, one product.
Run LightSend on your own server — or leave the running to us. Either way the encryption happens on the sender’s device: we see your files as little as anyone else.
